MINNEAPOLIS - Adrian Petersons hearing for the appeal of his suspension will be held on Dec. 2. And it will not be in front of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The NFL announced Friday that longtime hearing officer Harold Henderson will preside over the proceedings involving the Minnesota Vikings star running back. Goodell has the authority to decide whether to hear the appeal himself or appoint someone else.Peterson has not played since the opening week of the season while dealing with child abuse allegations in Texas. He was placed on paid leave while the legal process played out, and he pleaded no contest on Nov. 4 to misdemeanour reckless assault for injuring his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch.Goodell suspended Peterson earlier this week for the rest of the season and told Peterson that he will not be considered for reinstatement before April 15 for his violation of the NFLs personal conduct policy. Peterson is appealing the punishment, which the NFL Players Association called unprecedented, arbitrary, and unlawful. The union had been seeking a neutral arbitrator to oversee the appeal, saying the league is making up the process and punishment as it goes.Henderson worked for the league as chairman of its powerful Management Councils executive committee for 16 years. He also was a league vice-president of labour relations. He led the leagues negotiation team, which settled several lawsuits by NFL players and ultimately entered into a new collective bargaining agreement which included expanded free agency and a salary cap. That agreement has been extended several times, most recently through 2021. He regularly deals with NFL team owners, team executives, players, players union, player agents and attorneys on a variety of matters.Hendersons long history of working for the league did little to assuage the unions concerns about the process. The NFL should stop attempting to position a former NFL executive as neutral and independent, the union said. It is disappointing the league office made a decision to ignore the players request for fairness. The NFL argued that Goodells right to preside over appeals or choose an official has been part of the collective bargaining agreement since 1993. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said criticism of Henderson is unwarranted given his current position as president of the NFL Player Care Foundation, which is funded jointly by the union and the league; and his experience in hearing 87 appeals, including one from receiver Brandon Marshall that ended with his three-game suspension for a domestic violence incident being reduced to one game.Goodells punishment of Peterson comes under the new player conduct policy he unveiled in August. That came in the wake of criticism he received for his initial light treatment of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, who was caught on camera punching his then-fiancee in the face in an Atlantic City casino elevator. Rice was later suspended indefinitely, cut by the Ravens, and recently had his appeal heard by an arbitrator. The new, tougher guidelines call for a six-game suspension for the first assault, battery or domestic violence offence.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___AP Pro Football Writer Barry Wilner, in New York, contributed to this report. It was a lot more daunting for top-ranked Rafael Nadal. Murray, who last year became the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936, was drawn Friday to open the defence of his title against 104th-ranked David Goffin of Belgium, who will be playing in the main draw of the grass-court tournament for only the third time. Eighth-seeded Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., will face Matthew Ebden of Australia in the first round and could meet Nadal in the quarter-finals, while Vancouvers Vasek Pospisil, the No. 31 seed who is in top-seeded Novak Djokovics section of the draw, faces Dutchman Robin Haase. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., who lost in the qualifiers but entered the main draw as a lucky loser, opens against No. 29 seed Ivo Karlovic of Croatia. In the womens draw, top-ranked and five-time champion Serena Williams is in the same quarter as French Open champion Maria Sharapova. The two could face each other in the quarterfinals. No. 13 seed Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., who made the semifinals at the French Open earlier this month, is also in the same section as Williams and Sharapova. She opens against Slovak veteran Daniela Hantuchova while Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., takes on 10th-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova. Torontos Sharon Fichman will face Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland. The third-seeded mens doubles team of Torontos Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia will open against the Italian duo of Andreas Seppi and Paolo Lorenzi. In womens doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and Alicja Rosolska of Poland will play the 13th-seeded team of Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic and Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands. Murray, who is seeded third this year, has admitted he does not know how he will cope with the pressure of walking onto Centre Court as the defending champion on Monday. At least he has a relatively smooth path in the draw until the quarterfinals, where he could play seventh-seeded David Ferrer or Grigor Dmitrov, who won last weeks warm-up at Queens Club. Then looms a potential semifinal against top-seeded Novak Djokovic -- a rematch of last years final. "It will be a proud moment to come back as defending champion," said Murray, who is now coached by former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo after parting ways with Ivan Lendl earlier this season. "I dont know how I will feel, I have no idea. Im sure I will be nervous and feel some pressure, but Ill try to enjoy it. Its a new experience for me." For Nadal, its a lot trickier. The Spaniard, who holds two Wimbledon titles, has not fared well on the grass the past two years, losing in the second round in 2012 and the first round last year.dddddddddddd Hes also coming off a loss in his first match at the Halle grass-court tournament. The top-ranked Nadal, who is seeded No. 2, will start against No. 57 Martin Klizan of Slovakia. The Spaniard, who won his ninth French Open title earlier this month, could then face Lukas Rosol, who beat him here two years ago. Nadal, the only man with at least one Grand Slam title in 10 consecutive years, could then be pitted against big-serving Ivo Karlovic in the third round. Waiting in the quarterfinals could be another big hitter -- eighth-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada. Fridays draw put Murray in the top half with Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in 2011. Nadal is in the bottom half with seven-time champion Roger Federer. Federer will start against Paolo Lorenzi of Italy and Djokovic will play his first match against Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan. Djokovic could meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round and former finalist Tomas Berdych in the last eight. Federer, who has lost before the quarterfinals at three of the last four Slams, might face third-ranked and Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka in an all-Swiss encounter in the quarters. Sharapova, who defeated Serena Williams in the 2004 final at the age of 17 to win her only Wimbledon title and first Grand Slam championship, will open against Samantha Murray. Williams will take on Anna Tatishvili. If Williams and Sharapova get to the quarterfinals, it will set up their 19th career meeting. Williams leads 16-2 and has not lost to her Russian rival since the 2004 WTA Championships. The other potential womens quarterfinals are: Simona Halep vs. Jelena Jankovic, Victoria Azarenka vs. Agnieszka Radwanska, and Petra Kvitova vs. Li Na. Williams is coming off a second-round loss at the French Open, where Sharapova won her fifth major title. After Williams previous early exit at the French Open in 2012, when she lost in the first round, she went on to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Williams could face an intriguing fourth-round match against Bouchard, who has reached the semifinals of both Grand Slams so far this year. In the absence of defending champion Marion Bartoli, who retired less than six weeks after winning her sole Grand Slam title, last years runner-up finalist Sabine Lisicki will open Centre Court play on Tuesday against Julia Glushko. The third-seeded Halep, who achieved a breakthrough performance at the French Open by reaching her first major final, is in the same quarter as former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic.
